RED's Hydrogen One smartphone holographic display revealed

Professional camera maker   RED   made a surprise announcement earlier this year that it would be developing a smartphone carrying an undisclosed   holographic display   called the   Hydrogen One . Physical  prototypes  were shared through YouTuber Marques Brownlee, but unfortunately no view of the smartphone's display and no further details were available at the time. Now the technology behind the cutting edge display type has been discovered. A RED partnership with startup  Leia  Inc. will bring the displays to market. Leia was created in 2014 from HP's research labs and calls itself "the leading provider of lightfield holographic display solutions for mobile". As part of the exclusive partnership, RED has agreed to make an investment of an undisclosed sum in Leia.          The display works by projecting light that is only visible from certain viewing angles, providing a 3D appearance. While the images displayed are still not sci-fi quality hol

Google Drive to be shut down soon

Google's own cloud storage platforms --  Google Drive  and Google Photos -- are on their way out. In  a blog post  today, Google announced that from December 11t both popular file sync applications will lose official support. Shortly thereafter (in March), Google will be removing the applications entirely.          This move comes as a result of Google's desire to combine all of their existing cloud storage solutions into one cohesive app - something they've wanted to do since July. Moving forward, that app will be   Google Backup and Sync   for regular users (enterprise/G Suite customers will have access to the upcoming Drive   File Stream   which officially launches on September 26).           If you've never heard of Backup and Sync prior to this announcement, don't worry - it functions in pretty much the same way as Drive. You simply upload your data and photos to the cloud, sync it with the desktop app and call it a day.            Drive

Credit reporting firm Equifax hacked, 143 million consumers impacted

Credit reporting firm   Equifax   on Thursday announced a data breach  impacting around 143 million US consumers.           The unauthorized activity, which occurred from mid-May through July 2017, was discovered on July 29. Equifax says hackers exploited a website application vulnerability to gain access to users’ names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses and, in some instances, driver’s license numbers.           Credit card numbers of approximately 209,000 consumers were also compromised, as were certain dispute documents with personally identifying information belonging to roughly 182,000 users. Equifax also found unauthorized access to limited personal information for certain Canadian and UK residents.           One positive takeaway is the fact that the company has found no evidence of unauthorized activity on its core consumer or commercial credit reporting databases.          The credit reporting company said it immediately took steps to stop the intr

How to protect your data and avoid being hacked

Phones and other electronic devices                aren't impenetrable vaults.                               While most people aren't targets of the NSA, FBI or a foreign government, hackers are looking to steal the financial and personal information of ordinary people. Your phone stores more than just selfies. Your email account on the phone, for instance, is a gateway to resetting banking and other sensitive passwords. Like washing your hands and brushing your teeth, a little "cyber hygiene" can go a long way toward preventing disaster. 1. Lock  your phone with passcode :      Failing to do so is like leaving your front door unlocked.     A four-digit passcode - and an accompanying self-destruct feature that might wipe a phone's data after too many wrong guesses - stumped the FBI for weeks and forced them to bring in outside help. Using six digits makes a passcode 100 times harder to guess. And if you want to make it even harder, you can add l
